TechDays Nederland is van start in het World Forum - Den Haag

Het jaarlijkse Microsoft Evenement genaamd TechDays voorheen DevDays van Microsoft Nederland is van start gegaan vandaag en maar liefts voor 3 volle dagen.
De eerste dag (15 Februari 2012) staat in het teken van IT Pro specialisten.
De 2e en 3rd dagen respectivelijk (16 + 17 Februari 2012) staan uiteraard in het teken van Developers.
Op deze beide Developers dagen, zal de Nederlandse Community aanwezig zijn in de zo geheten Community Area waarin de bezoekers terecht kunnen met hun vragen over alle Microsoft Technologieen en Tools.

Ben je geintereseerd in wat de nieuwe versie van Team Foundation Server (Hosted TFS), Visual Studio Application Life Cycle Management, Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview, MTM Test Tool-V11 en nog meer? en wil je ermee aan de slag tijdens dit Evenement, dan ben je van harte welkom op de Visual Studio ALM Booth.

Succesful Hosted TFS Event at VISUG by Hassan Fadili at Microsoft Belgium

On Tuesday November 22th, VISUG User Group has hosted an event at Microsoft Belgium about Hosted TFS by Hassan Fadili see http://www.visug.be/Eventdetails/tabid/95/EventId/48/Default.aspx. This event was very interactive and many as 60 people have taken part. The topic was about Build, Relase and Deploy with TFS2011 and MS Deploy. A combination of Slides and Demo's was perfect to explain this common mechanism for developers.

BUILD conference Day2. All about tools and Azure Services!

The BUILD event day 2 is started with a great Keynote where many tools and technologies have been announced today. Nice to see wich direction is Micrsoft driving us to go ahead with the technology and take more out the all technical facilities and possibilities to meet our and customer requirements developing powerfull and fast software systems for the web, desktop, mobile devices and cloud. Visual Studio 11 preview and Team Foundation Server 11 preview are the major tools I'm focussing on today to get more out them and to discover the secrets of the VS ALM product to support and advice the customers at time to make decisions for now and the future.

BUILD Conference and Windows 8 Preview!

After a long time waiting for the BUILD conference, It is so far. Today September 13th is the BUILD event starting day with a GREAT keynote and with the first preview of the next Windows version "Windows 8". Steve Sinofsky have announced many gadgets of the new OS on both software and hardware levels. The powerfull hardware and exciting software combination, makes "Windows 8" a faster OS that Microsoft have build ever right now. With 4 amazing demo's, we saw:
- The new windows experience
- Some Metro style-apps
- Hardwre platform
- Cloud Services

There are many many futures built in "Windows 8" that we will see and experiment soon after downloading the bits later today or after receiving the "Slates" as BUILD conference attendees. Congratulations everyone :-) in Anaheim.

The BUILD conference this week is focused on developers and hardware partners.

You probably want to try out the preview release—and you can. Starting later tonight you can download the Windows 8 Developer Preview. This includes a 64-bit (x64) build with development tools to build apps, and a 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) build without development tools. The releases also include a suite of sample applications (please note these are merely illustrations of potential apps, not apps that we intend to ship with Windows 8). Laat je inspireren en kom naar DevDays 2011

Met nog minder dan een week, dan is het zover. DevDays 2011 gaan weer van start op 27,28 en 29 april 2011 in het World Forum in Den Haag, laat je voorraal inspireren en maak kennis met de nieuwe technologieen, vakgenoten en de Nederlandse Communities.
Vanuit Microsoft Nederland, Gebruikersgroepen en de MVP Programma, staan we jullie graag te woord en helpen we jullie bij het beantwoorden voor al jullie technische vragen over de Microsoft technologieen in de Community Area en Ask The Expert Lounge.

Dit evenement is een goede uitgelezen kans om van gedachten te wisselen, ervaringen te delen en heel veel FUN te beleven met elkaar. Een goede voorbeeld van combinatie WERK en Plezier. Daar staan DevDays 2011 en de Communities o.a. DotNed UserGroep voor. Geeknight 2011 datoverigens gratis is, is daar ook een goede voorbeeld van, waarin de techniek wordt gebruikt om plezierige en goede ideeen te laten zien op een grapige wijze.

Als je het me vraagt welke sessies ik interessant vindt op DevDays 2011, dan zal mijn agenda vanuit mijn expertises en interesses er alsvolgt uit gaan zien.

Uitreaard is mijn primaire doel om jullie van dienst te zijn bij de "Ask The Expert" van "Client Development" om al je vragen te beantwoorden. Wanneer de kans zich voordoet om de sessies te volgen, dan zal de ondersaatnde agenda voor mij van kracht zijn.

TFS2010 Build Management and Shared Dependencies

A very common question from people who are doing a lot of build stuff on daily basis inside projects for small and big organizations is: How to handle dependencies between projects/applications/team projects in TFS source control. A typical scenario is that you have a common library/framework tucked away nicely somewhere in TFS source control, and now you have some applications that, in some way, needs to reference this project.

For the users of TFS 2008, we have the great tool called: TFS Dependency Replicator from Codeplex Open Source Community site. Unfortunately this tool is not yet ready for TFS 2010 users.

Another alternative for the same goal to get the same results, is to use another tool for Extended Dependency Management with Team Foundation Server. My VS ALM MVP collegue Sven Hubert have build a great tool to simplify this goal. More information about Extended Dependency Management with TFS2010 can be found at: Sven's Blog.

Today March 8th, MSDN subscribers will be able to download and install Visual Studio 2010 SP1 from their subscriber downloads. If you're not an MSDN subscriber, you can get the update on Thursday, March 10th.

TFS-Project Server Integration Feature Pack
Also available for Visual Studio Ultimate with MSDN subscribers via Download Center today is the TFS-Project Server Integration Feature Pack. Integration between Project Server and Team Foundation Server enables teams to work more effectively together using Visual Studio, Project, and SharePoint and coordinates development between teams using disparate methodologies, such as waterfall and agile, via common data and metrics.

Visual Studio Load Test Feature Pack
Today, Microsoft have introducing a new benefit - Visual Studio 2010 Load Test Feature Pack - available to all Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate with MSDN subscribers. VS ALM Rangers shipped new release for WCF Load Test tool‏!

VS ALM Rangers shipped new release for WCF Load Test tool.
This tool takes a WCF trace file and a WCF client proxy or a WCF interface contract, and generates a C# unit test that replays the same sequence of calls found in the trace file. The unit test can then be used to load-test the target WCF services.

The following is a list of new features and improvements:

1- Provides support for DataSets
2- Delivers support for duplex contracts
3- Can handle ASMX services, even without a WCF client, which comes from the capability to process Fiddler2 traces
4- Automatically filters out NullMessage messages which can appear in service-side message logs
5- Verifies that the right kind of message log has been provided
6- Initializes out parameters in the stub methods so that generated code will always compile without modification
7- No longer locks the assemblies after the wizard has been used
8- Provides improved error reporting

dotNedUG meeting of october 12 was a great succes. With more than 120 attendees one of the most excited meetings of the year 2010. During this meeting, 2 topics are discussed:
1- Silverlight 4 and MVVM concept by Dennis Vroegop from Detrio Consultancy and dotNedUG.
2- Windows Phone 7 series with Silverlight by Arjen de Blok (@arjendeblok)from Humiq.

It was a great evening with a lot of interaction and discussion after the meeting.
I would like to thank all the attendees, Humiq for hosting our dotNedUG October meeting and also both speakers for the great sessions.

Windows 2000, XP SP2 and Vista End of Life Support‏!

Dear Microsoft Customers,

As you may be aware, there are a number of Microsoft Windows versions which will go out of support during the coming year. We want to help customers avoid the risk of running unsupported products in their environment. Please help us share the message below on your blog, twitter or Facebook account:

Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server are approaching 10 years since their launch and both products will go out of support on July 13, 2010.

Windows XP was launched back in 2001. While support for the product will continue, Service Pack 2 will go out of support on July 13, 2010. From that date onwards, Microsoft will no longer support or provide free security updates for Windows XP SP2. Please install the free Service Pack 3 for Windows XP to have the most secure and supported Windows XP platform.

Finally, Windows Vista with no Service Packs installed will end support on April 13 2010. Please install the free Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista to have the most secure and supported Windows Vista platform.

This talk presents 3 innovative tools from Microsoft Research in collaboration with Visual Studio DevLabs related to software reliability and testing: Code Contracts, Pex and CHESS (all tools are available for evaluation through the DevLabs incubation site from Visual Studio).

Bio of Peli:
Jonathan "Peli" de Halleux is actively working on Pex, an Automated Whitebox Testing tool for .NET at Microsot Research. Peli also collaborates with his colleagues from the CHESS and Code Contracts projects. On the side Peli also wrote MbUnit, an extensible unit test framework, many Reflector addins and other fun geek projects. Peli joined the Research in Software Engineering group in October 2006 where he has been working on Pex since then. Peli worked in the CLR as a tester in charge of the Just In Time compiler (2004-2006) and earned a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the Catholic University of Louvain (2000-2004).

I'm very pleased to be Re-awarded as MVP Team System. With the upcoming releases of Visual Studio 2010 and Team Foundation Server 2010, I'm looking forwards to implement more of them by our customers and continuing working together with other MVP's and productteams to get these products more stable and well performed...

Day 2 of TechEd Europe 2009

Day 2 of TechEd Europe 2009 is an interesting day for me. To begin with a short interview for the MVP Video Blog with MVP Marketing Manager (Karen-Young), thanks for that. It was a great experience and very pleased to do.
Keeping in Touch with the ALM guys is great and supporting the Community is high ecxcited as well. At INETA booth the interest for Communities is growing up and that makes a lot of things good.

We are from and to the Community. Just keep in touch and enjoy us at INETA booth for all your questions/suggestions during TechEd Europe 2009.

Later today, the welcom reception will start at 18:30, then we will have some fun with all the TechEd attendees. After that we will enjoy a Community party at WaterGate Club in Berlin. It will be a pleasure.

TechEd Europe 2009 Keynote!

Better late then never. I was very disapointed about it. Just to give you some impression about the keynote yesterday. Too IT Pro!!!
As TechEd Europe is combined this year, the keynote was IT Pro based. A lot of IT Pro stuff and Announcing Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 was the only new thing I can say. The focus was on Windows7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft ForeFront and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010). Maybe because PDC will start next week in Los Angeles, but we will see what the Keynote of the PDC will cover!.

But the community feeling is so good and very intersting to be here from that perspective. Community feeling = Sharing Experiences.

TechEd Europe 2009 is getting started and very excited to be here again. The weather is not so much good, but being here is Great.
Today is starting with sessions and the "Keynote" will start at 15:00.
It is nice to meet al the community guys (INETA)from other countries and work together to get the community feeling envolved.

Announcing Microsoft Ajax Library (Preview 6) and the Microsoft Ajax Minifier

The ASP.NET team have released a significant new update of the Microsoft Ajax Library (Preview 6). This update includes a bunch of new capabilities and improvements to our client-side AJAX library, and can be used with any version of ASP.NET (including ASP.NET 2.0, 3.5 and 4.0), and can be used in both ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC projects. 15-10-2009’s release includes the following feature improvements:

Better Imperative Syntax: A new, simplified, code syntax for creating client controls.
Client Script Loader: A new client-side script loader that can dynamically load all of the JavaScript files required by a client control or library automatically, and executes the scripts in the right order.
Better jQuery Integration: All Microsoft Ajax controls are now automatically exposed as jQuery plug-ins.
In addition to the client library improvements, we also today released a new (free) Microsoft AJAX Minifier tool. This tool allows you to substantially improve the performance of your websites by reducing the size of your JavaScript files. It can be run both as a command-line tool, and also ships as a Visual Studio MSBuild task that you can integrate into your VS projects to automatically minify your JavaScript files whenever you do a build.

Code Analysis Tool .NET (CAT.NET) v1 CTP available for download!

Just experiment with this tool, it works very well. This is availablae for download in two variants (32 and 64 bits)
CAT.NET is a snap-in to the Visual Studio IDE that helps you identify security flaws within a managed code (C#, Visual Basic .NET, J#) application you are developing. It does so by scanning the binary and/or assembly of the application, and tracing the data flow among its statements, methods, and assemblies. This includes indirect data types such as property assignments and instance tainting operations. The engine works by reading the target assembly and all reference assemblies used in the application -- module-by-module -- and then analyzing all of the methods contained within each. It finally displays the issues its finds in a list that you can use to jump directly to the places in your application's source code where those issues were found. The following rules are currently support by this version of the tool. - Cross Site Scripting - SQL Injection - Process Command Injection - File Canonicalization - Exception Information - LDAP Injection - XPATH Injection - Redirection to User Controlled Site.

VSTS Rangers Projects - WCF Load Test Tool 3.0 Ships!

Again, a new milestone have been reach by VSTS Rangers by shipping "WCF Load Test Tool 3.0".
What does this tool does? This tool takes a WCF or Fiddler2 trace file and a WCF client proxy, or a WCF interface contract, and generates a unit test that replays the same sequence of calls found in the trace file for WCF and ASMX services. The code generated is easily modifiable so that data variation can be introduced for the purpose of doing performance testing.

The tool will also integrate with Visual Studio 2005/2008 Team Edition for Software Testers and installs a wizard for creating the trace and processing it from inside Visual Studio.

What’s New in 3.0? The main new feature is support for ASMX web services. The tool uses WCF’s ability to interoperate with ASMX web services to test these services. A WCF proxy must be generated from the web service’s WSDL for the tool to be able to work, but the trace does not need to come from a WCF client, the tool now also supports reading pre-captured traces collected using Fiddler2.

There have been numerous other changes and fixes, the more significant ones are:

Source code is now a Visual Studio 2008 project
Support for custom trace file parsers.
Now handles classes derived from a generic collection.
Streams are now supported on data contracts and message contracts.
Tool now continues to run even if it fails to find a method in the referenced assemblies.
Support for out and ref parameters has been added.
Timed comments (command line only)
Derived types using KnownType/XmlInclude attribute are now supported.
Fixed bug where array elements were assigned sub classes of the element type.
Fixed bug with certain types (e.g. DateTime) used as type parameters in generic collections and dictionaries.

• Code Contracts provide a language-agnostic way to express coding assumptions, under the form of pre-conditions, post-conditions, and object invariants, for .NET programs. The contracts are used to improve testing via runtime checking, enable static contract verification, and documentation generation. Pex is an automated white box testing tool for .NET.
• Pex systematically tries to cover every reachable branch in a program by monitoring execution traces, and using a constraint solver to produce new test cases with different behavior. Pex can be guided by hand-written parameterized unit tests, which are API usage scenarios with assertions. The result of the analysis is a test suite which can be persisted as unit tests in source code.
• CHESS is a tool for finding and reproducing Heisenbugs in .NET and Win32 concurrent programs. CHESS repeatedly runs a concurrent test ensuring that every run takes a different interleaving. If an interleaving results in an error, CHESS can reproduce the interleaving for improved debugging.

Upgrading TFS from 2005 to 2008 SP1 on a dual server deployment!

I recently did an upgrade on a this scenario by a customer for whatever reason I had not faced before. It was a dual-server TFS 2005 installation and the server had Visual Studio 2005 and Team Explorer 2005 installed as well as WSS 2.0. If you are trying to upgrade a server like this one, here are some recommendations:

Please be careful and read the installation guide form Microsoft:

Uninstall Team Explorer.
Well, that's what I did but it may not be necessary, read on for details... the installation guide states that if you are installing 2008 SP1 on a server that also has Team Explorer installed, you should install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 before installing TFS 2008 SP1. Well, installing VS2008 SP1 will break your WSS 2.0, it is a known problem to Microsoft. Because I decided to leave the WSS upgrade to 3.0 until after TFS was fully upgraded to 2008 SP1 I ended up having this problem, so I decided to just uninstall all versions of Team Explorer to avoid any potential risks that would delay the upgrade,.

Upgrade TFS2005 to TFS2008 RTM.
Per the installation guide.

Upgrade your WSS 2.0 to 3.0 before applying the TFS 2008 SP1.
I cannot say I had a bad experience for applying the TFS SP1 first. After the experience I explained above, I just decided it could also break WSS 2.0 so I upgraded WSS right after the TFS upgrade. The only thing to note here is that you are going to end up with one WSS site and two WSS Central Administration sites after the upgrade. You will need to provide an alternative port for the WSS 3.0 Central Administration site (other than 17012 as that one is taken by the WSS 2.0 CA, I used 17013) and the upgrade guide does not tell you how to remove the old one afterwards.

Then apply TFS 2008 SP1.

Nieuw jaar, nieuwe kansen!

Alle eerste beste wensen voor iedereen en een gelukkig 2009. Ik hoop dat iedereen net als ik vol barst van energie om dit nieuw jaar weet als een leerzaam en presterend jaar te mogen beschouwen.

Zoals eerder is aangekondigd zijn we vanuit DotNed erg druk om het programma/agenda van DotNed community voor dit jaar 2009 compleet te maken. De eesrte helft van het jaar zijn we al vol geboekt, nu nog de 2e helft van het jaar plannen.
De reguliere DotNed sessies worden afgewisseld met de VSTS sessies. Vandaar dat jullie dit jaar veel gaan zien en horen vanuit VSTS track binnen DotNed community. Zo is er een sessie gepland op 9 maart 2009 over het testen in VSTS door Peli de Halleux. Peli maakt deel uit het Team System team uit Redmond vanuit test hoek. Hij is overigens de maker van MBUnit en Pex. Meer hierover in de aankondiging van maart 2009, daarnaast zal Hassan Fadili ,VSTS (track owner binnen DotNed community) een sessie houden over: “A lap Around VSTS2010” tijdens het SDE event van SDN. De datum en locatie worden nader bekend gemaakt.
Een ding is zeker , dit jaar wordt voor mij een VSTS jaar aangezien er veel gaat gebeuren op dit gebied met de komst van VSTS2010.
Uiteraard staan we altijd klaar vanuit DotNed om jullie vragen te beatwoorden en jullie problemen op te lossen als het gaat om .NET technologie en/of VSTS zaken.
Voor nu nogmaals een gelukkig en leerzaam 2009 jaar toegewenst.

Nieuwe TFS2008 VPC's beschikbaar met een langere geldigheidsduur!

Met dank aan:Brian Randell zijn de verleende VPC's van TFS2008 beschikbaar.
Zoals je wellicht weet zijn de VPC's die vanuit Microsoft beschikbaar gesteld worden voor een bepaalde product voor een bepaalde periode actief. Voor de TFS2008 VPC
was de oorspronkelijke eind datum gesteld op 31-12-2008. Omdat er veel mensen nog bezig zijn met TFS2008 evaluatie is vanuit Microsoft besloten om de TFS2008 VPC's opnieuw te laten maken door Brian Randell en daarmee de geldigheidsduur te verlenen. Mocht je geintereseerd zijn in de nieuwe beschikbare TFS2008 VPC's, dan zijn ze hier te vinden ook voor Hyper-V liefhebbers onder ons:

TechEd 2008 is aangebroken! - Explore

Nog 2 uur en 30 min te gaan en dan gaat de TechEd developers 2008 officiel van start. De keynote wordt om 14:00 gegeven door Jason Zanders (General Manager Visual Studio Micerosoft Corp.)het zal gaan over de ontwikkelingen rondom Visual Studio 2010, het thema is: Visual Studio 2010: Making your day easier.
Gisteren aangekomen in Barcelona na 2 uur vetrtraging op schiphol in Amsterdam door een technische storing aan het Transavia vliegtuig (737-700). Gelukkig is de storing tijdig geconstateerd en niet in de lucht. Het was niet meer mogelijk om met deze toestel te vliegen waardoor we uit moete wijken naar een andere toestel van dezelfde kaliber, alleen 2 uur later. Het was wel jammer maar begrijpelijk. Alles was verder prima gegaan na 1:50 min landen we veilig en wel in Barcelona, lekker weer uiteraard, niet verwacht zeker als je vanuit NL komt. Meteen naar de Conference Center voor de registratie en daarna naar het hotel. De avond was verder prima verlopen, een hapje gegeten met bekenden vanuit de community en werkvloer.
Dat was het zover, later meer over het verloop van vandaag met keynote en de sessies...

Sessies 1e dag PDC2008

Na de 1e keynote waar iedereen kritisch over was en terecht, waren uiteindelijk de sessies los gekomen en iedereen volgt zijn eigen sessies afhankelijk van interesse gebieden.
Mijn 1e sessie was: Visual Studio Team System Lab Around VSTS 2010 door Cameron Skinner.
“VSTS2010 is a BIG Release”, dat waren de eerste woorden van Cameron tijdens deze sessie en dat blijkt achteraf ook zo te zijn nadat er meer over de futures van deze release gesproken werd.
Een tipje van de sluier over de nieuwe futures in VSTS2010:
- Nieuwe bug template met handige customizable velden en meer info wat nu beschikbaar is over een bug en de afhandeling daarvan. Het moto is: No more / NoRepro
- Nieuwe Build Futures (Proces), erg handig om het build te proces te kunnen volgen en cutomizen tijdens de build, het moto is : No more Broken Builds
- Architectuur Explorer erg handig, het moto hierin is: The butterfly effect tegen te gaan.
- Generate Sequence diagrams from code (UML integratie in Architect Edition van VSTS 2010).
- Test Framework (Camano) voor testen vanuit UI. Het moto is: No More Regrerssion
- …..etc
Uiteraard zijn nog meer futures te noemen maar je moet ermee spleen dan kom je er wel achter. Benieuwt hiernaar, kom dan naar de DotNed meeting van november 2008 via (www.dotned.nl ).
De 2e sessie ging voornamelijk over: Team Foundation Server2010: Cool New Futures, door Brian Harry.
TFS2010 kent grote verbeteringen tov de huidige versies (2005 en 2008). Met TFS2010 hou je de qualiteit van hje code in de gaten door alle quality en test zaken die er mee gemeid zijn.
Met veel demos heeft Brian o.a, Configure & Build van TFS2010 laten zien. “Process” Future in de Build is absoluut een vooruitgaan. Uitbreiding van de “Retention Policy” met trigered and manual en private futures, erg cool om te zien.
Parallel development was ook aan de order gekomen en uiteraard alles over hoe je branching kunt managen. Query Report heeft ook de revieuw gepasserd en als laatst Customizable dashboard, erg gaaf om te zien….
Veel belovend, en prettig om te zien.

De 3e sessie van de 1e dag ging voornamelijk over: Agile Development with Visaul Studio 2010 door: Lori Lamkin & Sunder Raman.
Tools en agiles practices hebben de review gepasserd en de flow van agile dmv demos laten zien. Continuous Integration was een ervan. Scrum als methodologie wordt veel gepromoot en heeft absoluut een plek in VSTS2010. Concahngo team heeft een flitsende demo hierin laten zien.

Het was een leuke dag afgezien van de keynote.
Veel nieuws en sessie informatie van komende dagen volgen nog.

Wij zitten in iedere geval zonnig en droog in LA, hopelijk dat de regen in NL mee valt, ik leef met jullie mee. Het is hier fantastich.
De dag was afgesloten met een etentje van de exclusieve groep (MVP’s) georganiseerd door Microsoft. Daar hebben we nog gesproken met Anders Halsberg (geestelijk vader van C#, Delphi en Pascal), ja ja ,je hoort het goed, wij hebben er mee aan tafel gezeten tijdens het eten. Fotos volgen nog…

1e PDC 2008 Keynote door Roy Ozzie, Bob Muglia en Rick Rashid

De 1e PDC 2008 dag begon met de “keynote” als gewoonlijk bij de evenementen van Microsoft. De verwachtingen waren hoog. Het is voor het eerst dat Microsoft de “keynote” heeft verdeeld over 3 dagen. De 1e stond volledig in het teken van de nieuwe windows versie waar we mee te maken gaan krijgen in de komende tijd te weten: Windows AZURE.
Met volle trots heeft Ray Ozzie deze versie aangekondigd. Deze versie van Windows zal ons werk vergemakkelijken als het gaat om o.a. deployment van ons applicaties. Natuurlijk heeft iedereen zijn idee over, maar ik vind het persoonlijk een vooruitgaan.
Sommige futuers van deze versie zijn alsvolgt:
- Scalable Hosting
- Federated Data Center
- Automated Service Managament
- Manage Service, not just Server!
- High availability (24/7) with caching, LOB, …etc.
Bob Muglia heft tijdens deze “keynote” de nadruk gelegd op de Services platform van Windows AZURE.
Sommige requirements van deze services zijn alsvolgt:
- Interop & Business process
- Identity & Security
- Data Management & Compliance
- Service Management
- ….
Al op al was het leuk om te zien hoe Microsoft over de servers technologie denkt en welke kant het op gaat, maar deze “keynote” heeft niet de hoge gespannen verwachtingen overtroffen. Ik heb zelf van een “keynote” zeker van de PDC, meer verwacht. Gelukkig was ik niet de enige. Wellicht dat de andere “keynotes” mee vallen en meer nieuws bieden …….

PDC 2008 is van start en het feest kan beginnen in Los Angeles

een lange vlucht van totaal 16,30 uur met een tussen stop van 2,5 uur in Wachington DC Airport waren we gelukkig goed en wel aangekomen in Los Angeles LAX Airport om 20:00 locaal tijd. Alles is prima gegaan gelukkig (zelfs de douane!) na de slechte ervaring van 2005. Het is een bijzonder gevoel om je hotelkamer te betreden en van de rust te genieten na zo een lange dag vliegen. Het weer is perfect bij aankomst was het 15 grd en droog.

Nadat we uitgerust hebben, hebben we (Dennis Vroegop en Ik) zondag met Andre Obelink en Sander Gertz (Community Boys gaan verder in LA) afgesproken om naar de walvissen te gaan kijken in Long Beach. Uiteraard hoort een auto bij. De heren Andre en Sander waren hier al eerder en hebben een leuke Ford Mustang Cabrio geregeld. Het was erg gaaf om in het zonnige LA rond te rijden in een cabrio. Na de walvissen tocht wat erg leuk was (behalf dat het erg koud was op zee!!), zijn we gaan eten in een klassieke tent bij de haven van Long Beach (Fish Food) altijd goed. De garnalen waren lekker. Daarna zijn we gaan rijden naar het zuiden richting Santa Monica en de omgeving, Daar hebben we lekken van het strand en de boulevard genoten tot zonsondergaan. Na nader overleg zijn we naar Hollywood gereden en de bekende Hollywood boulevard bezocht (Dennis en ik) zitten daar in de buurt in een Hotel. Een vette hap mag natuurlijk niet ontbreken in LA. Heel snel zijn we een hamburger tent binnen gelopen en lekker van grote en lekkere hamburgers en patat genoten. Het was een leuke maar ook een vermoeinde dag.

Dat was dag 1 in LA. De PDC start dan maandag 27-10-2008 om 8:30 met de keynote van Ray Ozzie en Bob Muglia. Morgen hier meer over en over de sessies van dag 1 en 2 van PDC2008.

DotNed meeting 25-9-2008 & VSTS-TFS sessie, een succes!

Met maar liefst 48 bezoekers, was de DotNed meeting van 25-9-2008 over TFS 2008 wederom weer een succes. Deze meeting is mede mogelijk gemaakt door: Detrio Consultancy BV, daarvoor ons dank.

Dennis Vroegop heeft Detrio Consultancy BV in het zonnetje gezet en heeft laten zien waar we mee bezig zijn binnen Detrio als het gaat om 3D grafisch modellen gerealiseerd met de nieuwste technologieen (WPF, TFS, VS2008,...etc).

Daarna heeft Hassan Fadili het topic van deze avond Team Foundation Server 2008 Ins & Outs behandeld en de werking daarvan d.m.v. demos laten zien.

Wij kijken ernaar uit om jullie na de PDC2008 meer te gaan vertellen over wat op ons afkomt als het gaat om Microsoft technologieen.

As far as I understand, Dreamweaver doesn't support MSSCCI, but has a different integration to VSS databases. Dreamweaver uses a C++ based API for Source Code repository providers - hence details of what platform you would want it to work from are important.
FYI, the MSSCCI is an interface for talking to source control systems popularised by Visual Source Safe. It has some limitations but has been adopted by a number of vendors as a way of getting applications to talk to source control systems. Microsoft provide a MSSCCI provider for Team Foundation Server that allows you to use TFS for source control from older applications (such as Visual Studio 2003 etc).

PDC 2008 komt eraan!

Het aftellen is begonnen, eind oktober 2008 is het zover. Microsoft organiseerd dit jaar de uitgestelde PDC van vorige jaar weer in Los Angeles (USA). De PDC 2008 vind plaats van 26-10-'08 (pre-conference) t/m 30-10-'08 in de Convention Center in Los Angeles. Het is een unieke beleveing. Als je de TechEd al leuk vindt, dan moet je de PDC absoluut niet missen. Mijn collega Dennis Vroegop en ik zijn zeker van de partij naast andere tot nu toe bekend namen van 10 andere landgenoten en bekenden binnen de community. Ik heb ontzettend zin in.

Hou deze blog in de gaten. Alle belevingen daar worden zeker hierop en/of op de blog van Dennis gepost.

Nieuwsgierig, neem een kijkje op de PDC site (http://microsoftpdc.com/Registration/). Voor de prijs hoeft je het niet te laten, zeker met de dollar koers.

Het is zover, DevDays 2008 is aangebroken!

Het is eindelijk zover, DevDays 2008 is aangebroken. DevDays is voor mij de plek om nieuwe ideeen op te doen en direct toe te passen in het vakgebied. Belangrijker nog is de sociale aspect wat daar aan hangt. Tijdens DevDays kun je niet alleen ideeen opdoen over nieuwe technologieen maar ook nieuwe vrienden en vakgenoten ontmoeten. Daarmee vergroot je je netwerk en uiteraard ook je kennis. DevDays 2008 in de RAI Amsterdam "is the place to be ", dat mag je niet missen!. De Community boys staan klaar voor je om je vragen te beantwoorden over allerlei Microsoft technologieen en producten. Kom daarom even burten bij de community stands.

Geeg Night beloofd een leuke avond te worden met vertschillende thema's, benieuwd naar hoe een scheidsrechter eruitziet op het veld en hoe deze een wedstrijd leidt, kom dan naar IT BOXING sessie tijdens de Geeg Night.

3e VSTS UG sessie was wederom weer een succes!

Gisteren 8-5-2008 heetf de 3e sessie van VSTS UG plaats gevonden bij Macaw in schiphol Rijk. Het was wederom een leuke avond. De spreker Henri Kluijtmans van RELIFOURCE heeft de Extensibility in TFS het revieuw laten passeren. Helaas gingen de geplande demo's niet door vanwege een connectie probleem met TFS. De aanwezige hebben hun vragen kunnen voorlegen en er was een leuke interactie en discussie sfeer ontstaan. Daar doen we het voor. Henri hartelijke dank. Uiteraad dank ik hierbij ook MACAW voor de geweldige locatie en lekker eten en gastvrijheid. Ik heb genoten van de avond en alles eromheen, ik hoop ook hetzelfde voor de andere aanwezigen.

Volgende VSTS UG meeting zal plaats vinden ergens in Augustus, de datum en locatie worden nader bekend gemaakt. Het onderwerp zal worden: VSTS ALM concept theorie en Demo's door VSTS UG Track owner Hassan Fadili. Dit mag je niet missen....

8 mei: VSTS over Extensibility in Team System 2008

Op donderdag 8 mei 2008 wordt de 3e sessie van de VSTS Usergroup gehouden bij Macaw te Schiphol-Rijk. De spreker van de avond is niemand anders dan Henri Kluijtmans. Henri is werkzaam bij Reliforce (www.reliforce.com ) en is vanaf het begin met VSTS aan de slag. Tijdens deze sessie zal Henri Team System 2008 Extensibility de revue laten passeren.

Aankomende donderdag 10 april is het weer zover, een hands-on lab van de gebruikersgroep dotNed. Deze keer is het onderwerp DSL-Tools. Onder begeleiding van Dennis Vroegop zelf stoeien met DSL is een uitkomst voor allen die wel eens wat meer willen weten hierover.Afgelopen 27 maart heeft Dennis zijn presentatie gehouden over dit onderwerp. Nu dus de hands-on ervaring.

VSTS UG februari sessie is wederom een succes!

Onlangs heeft de VSTS UG (DotNed- .NET gerbuikersgroep Nederland) de tweede VSTS sessie georganiseerd op donderdag 7-2-2008 bij New Horizons (http://www.newhorizons.nl/ ) in Utrecht.

Tijdens deze sessie dat bezocht werd door 33 man, heeft Marcel de Vries de nieuwe TFS2008 futures de review laten passeren. De reacties van de aanwezige waren positief en daar doen we het voor.

LEAP 2008 is van start gegaan in Redmond!

Na een lang reis zijvan 9,5 uur zijn we gisteren goed en wel aangekomen in SEATTLE (Redmond). Het weer viel gelukkig erg mee, zonnig en droog.
Vandaag zijn we gestart met de sessies bij de Microsoft Conference Centre in Redmond. Met de bussen vanuit de geweldige HYATT Hotel in Bellevue mee gebracht naar MCC. Geloof me, het is erg cool. Een Microsoft dorp in principe waar alles gebeurt. Het ontbijt was erg machtig en de eerte sessie gaat zo beginnen over "The architectuur Last Milll" door niemand anders dan"Norm Judal" CEO of Architectuur group bijMicrosoft in SEATTLE.

Eerste VSTS UG Meeting in Nederland, een grote succes!

Donderdag 10 januari 2008 van 19:00 tot 21:30, heeft de eerste VSTS-UG (Visual Studio Team System-UserGroep) meeting plaats gevonden als onderdeel van DotNed community (.NET Gebruikersgroep Nederland (http://www.dotned.nl/)). Deze meeting was een enorme succes, maar liefst 30 man waren erbij aanwezig en zijn zeer positief over dit initiatief van de track eigenaar Hassan Fadili. De eerste meeting was georganiseerd bij New Horizons in utrecht (http://www.newhorizons.nl/Utrecht.100.0.html). Hierbij nogmaals mijn dank aan deze sponsor van de avond.

Het thema van de avond ging voornamelijk over het concept VSTS en ALM (Application Life Cycle Management). Omdat dit de eerste meeting betreft van deze track, heeft deze een algemeen karakter. Het doet me goed om Serge van Schie van Microsoft te badanken voor zijn bereidheid als spreker van deze eerste meeting, Serge bedankt!. - Find in Source Control tool is an addition to the Team Explorer menu that provides the ability to locate files and folders in source control by the item’s status or with a wildcard expression.
- Open a selected folder in Windows Explorer straight from Team Explorer. This feature allows you to jump straight to the mapped folder location from within Source Control Explorer.
- Quick Label feature that allows labels to be easily applied to a given selection of files and folders in the Source Control Explorer.
- Build Notification tool that runs in the Windows task bar notification area monitoring the status of the build definitions you have specified. It can be configured to show notifications when builds are queued, started, or completed for multiple build definitions spanning multiple Team Foundation Servers.
- Additional TFPT.EXE commands for configuring Team Explorer connection settings (tweakui) and for destroying Work Items and Work Items Type Definitions (destroyWI, destroyWITD).
- Updates to the TFS Best Practices Analyzer for use with a Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server deployment.
- The Process Template Editor is updated for use with Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server. It also has several improvements, including: the ability to launch standalone w/o a Visual Studio installation, performance improvements, improved discoverability and bug fixes.
Bug fixes and removal of Power Tools that are now included within Team Foundation Server:
Annotate and Treedif are now included in Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Explorer; however, Annotate remains is still available in the command-line tool (TFPT.EXE).
TestToolsTask is included in Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server as part of Team Foundation Build.

VS2008 is gereleased en alle remmen gaan los!

vs2008 is al een week uit en wij zijn lekker bezig om dat te evalueren. Dat heben we natuurlijk ook gedaan tijdens de beta releases daarvan, maar het RTM product is natuurlijk wat voor klanten telt en verkoopbaar is.
Een van de dingen wat ik erg fijn vind in VS2008 is .NET Framework multitargeting, daarmee kun je in verschillende .NET Framework versies je code compileren afhankelijk van welke applicatie je bouwt. meer hierover en nog meer toegevoegde waarden van VS2008 lees je in de volgende blog link: http://blogs.msdn.com/lukeh.

TechEd 2007 missie is geslaagd!

Vanuit de community kijken we met trots en lekkere gevoel naar deze evenement. Het doel is bereikt door de connecties en netwerk uit te breiden, concreet afspraken m.b.t. de communiuty bezigheden bij de juiste "Microsoft key mensen" onder de aandacht te brengen d.m.v. verschillende intervieus met deze mensen te voeren.

Als grote trots was natuurlijk een van de laatste sessies van TechEd 2007 waarin ons maatje Dennis Vroegop de boodshap heeft over gebracht over Web applicaties infrastructuur en security daarvan en uitstekend heeft gepresenteerd voor een zaal van ongeveer 250 man. Deze sessie ging perfect en was zeer leerzaam waardoor een leuke discussie aan het eind was ontstaan, erg top. Als bevestiging hiervan is de uiteindelijke beoordeling voor deze sessie uitgekomen op 7,7 als cijfer. Dat zegt natuurlijk genoeg over de kwaliteiten die we hebben binnen de community. Hier zullen alleen maar meerdere volgen. Daar doen we het o.a. voor.

Wij kijken graag terug naar TechEd 2007, up naar het volgende jaar!.

Nou is het weer tijd voor hard werken en leuke dingen doen binnen de community(user groepen).

Gisteren avond na de sessies, zijn we met alle aanwezige Nederlandse community leden (DotNed, VB Central en SDN) op stap geweest en lekker gaan eten en de plannen van de NL commuinty besproken.

Het was erg gezellig en dat er zelfs de "Ober" een man overigens van de indruk is geraakt.

Samenvatting sessies 08-11-2007

Gisteren was in het teken van deep dive sessies over Team Build, Continuous Integration, Version Control, en Release Management in Visual Studio Team System 20o8.

Er zijn nieuwe features in deze versie meegenomen t.o.v. de huidige versie 2005 die het leven van een build manager en configuration manager binnen projecten gaan vergemakkelijken. Het is handig dat je met weinig effort en "out of the box" functionaliteit aan de slag kunt met je build en release management. Natuurlijk zijn er altijd uitzonderingen hierin te verzinnen(niet elke project en/of bedrijfspolicy is hetzelfde). Ik meld je alleen maar dat de komende versie van Team System 2008 de moeite waard is.

Dus wees gewaarschuwd!

Scrum for VSTS sessie

De 3e sessie over VSTS ging voornamelijk over Scrum for VSTS, hierin is eerste instantie Scrum als methodologie uitgelegd, daarna is er over gegaan op hoe je Scrum toepast in Team System d.m.v. het gebruik van Scrum for VSTS process template. Overview VSTS sessies van gisteren!

Gisteren waren 3 sessies over VSTS extensibility, cutomization en Srum for VSTS.De eerste en tweede sessie gingen over VSTS in het algemeen, daarna ging de spreker: Kevin Kelly over naar de Extensibilty van WorkItem Tracking deel en Rapporting deel van VSTS. Het is natuurlijk mogelijk om VSTS aan te passen naar jouw wensen afhankelijk van welke process je hanteert binnen je organisatie. Dat was leuk om te zien. Extensibility in Team System is ook een van de meeste voorkomende onderwerpen. Hiermee kun je Team System uitbreiden met leuke futures die je optimaal kunt gebruiken binnen de organisatie. Deze uitbreidingen dien je in de Code uit te voeren, terwijl customization op XML File niveau plaats vindt zoals in de Process Templates.

Looking 3D Visualizations with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)

Het is een eer om ook in Barcelona vertegenwordigd te zijn door mijn maatje en .NET Gebruikers groep voorzitter Dennis Vroep, die deze sessie verzogd heeft en met succes. Dennis, Klasse!
Overview:

Vanochtend helaas twee sessies die een interessante titel hadden, maar waarvan de inhoud minder interessant bleek te zijn. De eerste die ik vandaag heb bezocht was WIN315: Cool Looking 3D Visualizations with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) en werd gepresenteerd door de Nederlander Dennis Vroegop. In deze level 300 sessie liet hij zien hoe je met WPF op een eenvoudige wijze, en geheel zonder code(!) 3D-visualisaties kunt maken.
Hij begon met de basics van 3D-programmeren. Hij ging dus uitleggen wat een viewport is, een camera, een lichtbron enz. en hoe je die aanmaakt in een WPF XAML-file. Op zich heel leuk, maar voor een level 300 praatje mag je dat natuurlijk als basiskennis van het aanwezige publiek beschouwen. Aangezien ik zelf al enige ervaring met 3D-programmeren en ook al met WPF had, wist ik dit allemaal al. Ook het door hem getoonde voorbeeld, een simpele 3D-kubus die kon roteren, vond ik niet zo indrukwekkend. Ook verspilde Dennis veel kostbare tijd door alle code zelf in te kloppen. Aangezien het niet zulke spannende code was, had hij beter code-snippets kunnen gebruiken.
Wat wel leuk was, was de nieuwe WPF-designer van Visual Studio 2008. Deze laat in een split-view live de resultaten van je XAML-code zien. Hier waren al wel externe tools voor (bijv. XAML Cruncher en XAML-pad), maar nu zit het standaard in Visual Studio 2008, wat een grote vooruitgang is. Helaas crashte de Beta 2 versie van VS2008 nogal vaak op deze WPF-designer, maar we mogen er van uit gaan dat deze bug in de uiteindelijke release-versie opgelost is. In de uiteindelijke versie van z’n kubus-applicatie had hij de kubus aan elke zijde voorzien van een spelend AVI-filmpje. Natuurlijk een heel krachtig voorbeeld, maar helaas een voorbeeld dat al zo vaak voorbij gekomen is op de diverse WPF-sites, dat dat ook geen verrassing was.
Tot slot had hij nog een voorbeeld van een business-applicatie, welke gebruik maakt van WPF, waarbij database-data werd gevisualiseerd als een 3D-staafgrafiek op een kaart van Nederland. Dit geheel was te roteren met de muis.
Kortom: misschien een leuke sessie voor developers die nieuw zijn in de WPF 3D-wereld, maar te simpel voor de meeste aanwezigen.

Building ASP.NET 3.5 with VS2008 deel 2

De tweede dag is van start, deze dag is begonnen met de tweede deel over de sessie over ASP.Net 3.5 using Visual Studio 2008, door Omar Khan. Tijdens deze sessie zijn de volgende onderwerpen aan de order gekomen:- New ASP.NET 3.5 Data Controls zoals: - List View - Linq Data Control - Data PagerDeze controls zijn middels een demo gepresenteerd. Het ziet er goed uit.- ASP.NET AJAX / ASP.NET AJAX control toolkit: Met deze tool kit beschik je over: - Intelliscense in Javascript - Debbuging and Profiling in Javascript- ASP.NET AJAX Extended control support
- IIS7.0: Met deze versie van IIS heb je mogelijkheid om je ASP.NET applicatie te draien met meeste uitgebereid rollen en mogelijkheden, denk aan de administrator Rol waarin meeste configuraties mogelijk zijn. Afhankelijk van welke rol je bent geconfigureerd, kun je wel dingen doen met je ASP.NET Web applicatie in je Web Farm.
IIS7.0 beschikt over 2 modes: ISAPI Mode (compact) en Integrated Mode.

Agile Development with VSTS

De tweede sessie van vandaag ging over "Agile Development with Visual Studio Team System" door Roy Osherov.Tijdens dseze sessie heeft Roy een terug blik gegeven op aantal methodologieen (Scrum, XP, DSDM, RUP,....etc). Inhoudelijk is er op scrum ingegaan en hoe dat toegepast kan worden met of zonder VSTS binnen bouw trajecten.Er is nadruk gelegd op testing en build mechanisme namelijk Continuous Build in VSTS. Een overvieuw van VSTS hoort natuurlijk erbij in 5 min. Het is leuk om te zien hoe andere omgaan met processen terwijl we het allemaal over hetzelfde hebben. Het is het moment om hier intern wat mee te doen... Tot dan..

Breakout Sessies zijn van start!

De kop is eraf. De kerynote is geweest en de reguliere sessies zijn weer in volle gang. De eerste sessie van vandaag die ik bjgewoond heb, ging over "Building complete Web Applications using ASP.NET 3.5 en Visual Studio 2008"door Omar Khan. Dze sessie laat zien wat de nieuwe futures zijn in ASP.Net 3.5 zoals:
- Multitargeting Support: Binnen Visual Studio 2008 kun je kiezen tegen welke .NET Framework je wilt programeren, het veranderen van een .NET Framework naar een ander houdt in dat je ook wel of niet over een bepaalde functionaliteit kunt beschikken, bijvoorbeeld als je in .NET Framework 3.5 ontwikkeld, beschik je over de mogelijkheid om WCF Web applicaties te maken. Dat heb je niet als je tegen .NET Framework 2.0 progarmeer natuurlijk. en zo zijn er nog meer van deze gadgets uit te kieze.
- Ajax Extension Controls: Deze controls zijn nieuwe binnen VS2008
- Visual Studio 2008 HTML Designer: Importeert HTML Designer engines zoals in Expression Web.
- New Capabilities: Er zijn natuurlijk andere leuke dingen te noemen zoals:
. Fast Designer / source switching
. Split view designer
. Nested Master Pages
. Rich CSS Editor support (Zie volgende voor gratis download van CSS Web template: www.oswd.org).

Keynote TechEd 2007!

De keynote is net afgelopen, er zitten leuke dingen in de pipeline. Tijdens de keynote, lag de nadruk op de ontwikkelingne rondom Visual Studio 2008. Er zijn 3 advances pilaren behandeld, te weten:

- Platform Advances:

Hierin is diep ingegaan op de .Net Framework 3.5 Data Support met ondersteuning vOOR linq en Microsoft Sync Framework, en Silverlight.

- Tools Advances:Hierin is de nadruk gelegd op Visual Studio 2008 en wat erin zit, Visual Studio Team System (SCALABILITY and Performance) en Microsoft Expressions.

- Content Advanes:Hierin is verwezen naar de effort van Microsoft in Patterns en Practices en MSDN (Code Gallery, MSDN Wiki en Translation Wiki).
Uiteraard zijn tijdens de keynote wat announcements gedaan te weten:

- Microsoft Sync Framework, wel als CTP beschikbaar vanaf vandaag (5-11-2007).

- Visual Studio 2008 en .NET Framework 3.5, dit zal deze maand berschikbaar komen.

- Microsoft PopFly.
De boodschap is duidelijk dat we snel moeten schakelen om bij te blijven. Dat was het voor nu, nu naar de sessies.

TechEd 2007 is aangebroken!

Eindelijk is het zover, TechEd Europe 2007 is aangebroken. Gisteren aangekomen in Barcelona met Collega's zowel van Atos Origin als Community maatjes. Lekker vlucht gehad. Daarna lekker door Barcelona getoort met de bus, rondleiding gehad, veel gezien.

om 18:00 naar de Conference centre geweest voor de registratie om de drukte van maandag ochtend te vermijden. Erg cool. Als ITér hoor je gewoon hier te zijn.

Voor deze week staat veel op het programa, naast sessies bijwonen voornamelijk over VSTS, VSTO, Sharepoint en Architectuur, ben ik te vinden zeker in de lunch pauzes bij de community stand van INETA Europe als Ask the Expert over .NET technologieen en hoe INETA community, .NET gebruikersgroepen verder kunnen helpen om van elkaars expertise te leren.

Uiteraard is s'avond erg leuk om door de Ramblas te lopen, terrasje te pakken en een lekkere hapje ergens te gaan eten met collega's en/of community maatjes. Er is dus veel te doen.

Om 14:00 is de keynote van TechEd 2007 door: S. Somasegar (Corporate Vice President of the Developer Division, Microsoft Corporation). De inhoud wordt later gepost.
